The first phase of the Hickory Slough Sportsplex, located north of FM 518 on Hughes Ranch Road, is making progress towards being open to the public. As the project nears completion, the focus is turf fertilization, top-dressing application and weed removal to ensure safe field play and long-term turf viability. The facility is expected to open in late summer 2015.
Phase 1 of the Hickory Slough Sportsplex includes six sports fields with three fully lighted fields. The sportsplex also features a concession stand, large shade canopy and restroom facilities. The need for additional sports facilities in the City of Pearland was initially highlighted in the 2005 Parks Master Plan, and was funded in the 2007 Bond Program.
Recreation needs and the City’s population continue to rise, leading existing facilities to consistently reach capacity. With much of the work identified in earlier plans and bonds underway or completed, a new Parks Master Plan is under development and set to be considered in 2015.
“The opening of the Sportsplex will provide us with the opportunity to better serve the growing community. We are excited to soon host local athletes on the new fields,” said Chris Orlea, Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation.
“With the addition of Hickory Slough fields and another set of fields under construction on Shadow Creek Ranch Parkway, west of Kingsley, our residents are steadily seeing the investments to our Parks System,” Orlea continued.
Once open, the City will begin implementing user agreements with area sports groups. The process will ensure City resources accommodate the largest number of residents.
