Mayor Tom Reid joined MHI and MCO Heads in cutting the ribbon.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held for Phase One of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor International (MHI) on Saturday (April 25) at its campus location at 14888 Kirby Dr.

Speakers included Gampa Bhat, President of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor International and Hiroaki Osaki, President of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor Corporation.

Kaminari Taiko, a Japanese drumming ensemble based in Houston, provided the entertainment before the ribbon cutting. The building was blessed in Hindi and prayed over in English. Once the ribbon was cut, tours were conducted along a red carpet that led to a festival and a Press Conference, which was emceed by Channel 13’s Mia Shay.

City Manager Clay Pearson and Mayor Tom Reid were featured speakers at the Press Conference. Both heartily welcomed MHI to “the neighborhood.”

The $75 million compressor component plant is expected to bring another 100 -200 jobs to Pearland, according to Bhat.

Pearland Works started packaging work for compressor systems in April. The facility receives machinery and components from MHI’s manufacturing plant in Hiroshima, Japan and puts the finishing touches on them, packages them up and ships them out to Gulf Coast petrochemical companies.

The 140,000 sq. ft. warehouse provides shop space for the manufacture and service of process compressors and mechanical drive steam turbines.

Future plans call for expansion into manufacturing, testing, installation and service, making the campus a 24-hour “one-stop shop” facility.

To prepare for this expansion, MHI has invested $26 million on equipment and a crane that’s able to lift 300 tons.

Pearland Works is the first U.S.-based manufacturing and service location for the Japanese-based company. Bhat said that Pearland was an “obvious choice” because of its close proximity to the petrochemical industry.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor International Corp. is a U.S. subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor Corporation (MCO-I). For more information about MHI, visit MHICompressor.com.
